Hey There, Actors and Actresses and those of you who love them! - July 26, 2010

OMG! The Howard Meltzer seminar was GREEEEAT! Many of the students told me that it was the best seminar EVER! The industry guests kept on saying how they couldn't believe how many great kids and teens here in my program! Howard even said to one group that he thought that my program was "the best in the country" because it taught the Craft of acting. One of the managers said that she had gone to a scouting thing a few weeks ago, saw 600 kids and only picked 2...She said she saw at least 20 the first DAY that she wanted to watch develop! ALSO, ONE THING I DIDN'T TELL YOU IS THAT PRISCILLA IS A PRODUCER AS WELL! (She had asked me not to say anything, but she was checking the students out for some projects she has in mind for the future! COOL, huh?)

MY STUDENTS WERE AMAZING! It was totally worth working as hard as we all did (including your kids) during the buff-ups. CONGRATS!!!!! I am very proud of my students!

One of the things Howard said this weekend was my program was great because it helped students to get to what he referred to as "the olympics"...because being on a show or getting a movie is much like winning the olympics. Many people from all over the world are trying to 'get the part', but only a few can win the gold, silver and bronze!

He also talked about how it takes time, effort and a lot of hard work to get there for both parents and the students. It's always nice to keep that in mind because it takes years of hard work and dedication for your child to obtain their goals and it helps to have an understanding parent who "gets" the step process. Think of a long staircase and how each stair step represents this business...Once I understood that, it helped me become content with my own son's progress, not just with the business, but obtaining the learning tools in class as well.

Be happy when he learns how to stay in character from the beginning of the scene till the end. Be excited when she learns how to listen, react and be effected. Cheer your child on when she is able to cry for the first time in a scene or gets laughs from her work by developing the right comic timing in the scene. When she learns how to direct others, it helps her learn how to be on the other side (as in our directing class this week). These are all very important steps to having the career you want!

If you have the right attitude and help your child with work ethic and attitude, and develop patience, understanding and love for the acting process, it can happen!

By the way, we just set another date for a cool seminar: ANOTHER SEMINAR COMING UP---SAVE THE DATE!!!!: We are very excited to announce that L. A agent Jennifer Patredis of C.E.S.D. Youth Division will be joining us Oct. 16th & 17th for an exciting weekend! She is the agent who helped me for years co-developing taletn...she as the agent, myself as the coach for stars like Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Logan Miller, Logan Henderson, Madison Pettis & more. Her agency just booked one of the most prestigious roles of the year for the lead role in a Warner Brothers film called "Project X".....THOMAS MANN, (YES!...the very one who many of you took Film 1 and Film 3 from at my studio).... The producer of this movie also produced "Hangover" and "Old school "...HIS life is about to change!

More details on this to come, but please mark your calendars! We are now negotiating the other person who is going to be coming to be our guest, but Jen is one of the best agents I have ever known: Smart, Sharp, Connected and best of all- Ethical!

Hey There, Actors and Actresses and those of you who love them! - May, 2010

I am so sorry for not getting this summer schedule out sooner. It's been so crazy busy! After being in LA for 7 weeks, I hit the ground running once I came home with May classes and the Catherine Stroud seminar to work on...which was a great success. In fact, TWO of my students are/have flown out to LA for producer sessions for starring roles in TV shows she is working on BECAUSE of what Catherine saw this weekend in the seminar! Isn't that AWESOME?! -And the agents spotted a few people they liked as well! (Sigh)...I love helping my actors reach their dreams. It's so fun!

CODY LINLEY & LOGAN HENDERSON ("Big Time Rush") came to visit me at the studio last week and weekend. They gladly gave out autographs and were happy to chat about their time when THEY were a student of mine. THANKS SO MUCH, LOGAN AND CODY! The students were ecstatic! (You never know who might be visiting my studio!)

SUMMER CLASSES are the best time to get involved in my program. The usual six week class can be done in ONE WEEK...much like SUMMER SCHOOL. I can see so much growth in my students that decide to be involved. You are welcome to pick as many sessions as you would like. For example, There is a Film 2 and Film 3 next to each other June 21-25 from 10-2:00. Film 2 and 3 can be taken at the same time, so if you would like the benefit of taking both classes at the same time (and Mom can actually shop and eat lunch), that is an option for you.

NEW SUMMER CLASSES!-

COMMERCIAL CLASS! I have a COMMERCIAL class (for both lower levels and master classes) coming the first week of July taught by Vicki Baumann for every level. Vicki Baumann, acting coach (and also mom of Kenny Baumann, who plays "Ben" on "Secret Life of American Teenager") is coming here from LA to give a commercial class I think is phenomenal. I sent a student to her in LA (when I was here in Dallas) who had no training in commercials whatsoever and had only just begun with me. Vicki gave her an intensive commercial training workshop. She used that training for an audition/interview with a hot LA agent, and not only LANDED the agent, but was put on their "favorite" list! I was impressed! You will love Vicki and you will love the class!

GUITAR CLASS! BEN SULLIVAN will be teaching guitar classes this summer. All of the guitar classes you see on the schedule will be BEN! Alot of you know him and realize what an awesome teacher he is. GUITAR and song-writing are his passions. He loves that even more than acting (I don't get it!). Ben is in this month's "Texas Monthly" (page 159) on the Texas State University page. Along with graduating this month Summa Cum Laude- a 3.9 GPA, his professors have given him the highest of praise (see the article). I don't know how much longer we will have him, so please take this opportunity! Remember what happened to our other teachers- Cody Linley, Logan Henderson, Logan Miller, etc. They are here and then, they are gone to wonderfully green pastures.

SONG-WRITING AND SINGING CLASSES- This is the first summer we have offered singing and song-writing classes. Bridgette began singing classes meant to help out with auditions when singing is a must. They have been so popular, we decided to have them be a part of our summer schedule.

OUR BIGGEST SEMINAR OF THE SUMMER IS July (JULY 24 & 25). HOWARD MELTZER is coming that weekend along with two SUCCESSFUL managers from L.A. One of them (Priscilla Moralez from One Talent Management) manages Kevin Costner and her management company manages Charlize Theron and Dakota Fanning. She also produces!!!! The other manager (Justine Hunt from Hines and Hunt) will also be attending both days. She has a few of my clients. She fights tooth and nail to get them seen on everything they are right for. I love both of these women- Different styles, Different personalities-Both honest and hard-working people who love their clients. MY kind of people! Of course, HOWARD MELTZER is almost everyone's favorite casting director- gracious, classy, kind, smart. He (along with his partner, Carol Goldwasser) casts "Hannah Montana", "I'm in the Band" and now, "Billion Dollar Freshman". He also consults on projects like "Diary of a wimpy kid" (Look him up at www.imdb.com). It will be a huuuuuge seminar weekend! BIG WEEKEND- JULY 24 & 25. SIX sessions so that we can accommodate many students!!!

VIDEOS OF THE MICHAEL WELCH SEMINAR! Remember the Stephanie Laffin (House Casting director) and MICHAEL WELCH SEMINAR!? Michael was in all the TWILIGHT movies?! Was your child a part of those IMPROV workshops meant to loosen the student up more in auditions? WELL, We have videos (edited by Tom Maden) that were taken at MICHAEL's classes. HERE ARE THE LINKS:

Wondering about the June seminar previously advertised? JUNE SEMINAR was postponed. We had a seminar planned for the weekend of June 26, moved it to June 19, and realized that weekend is FATHER'S DAY... We certainly didn't want to intrude into "DAD's territory", so we are moving the June seminar to Fall.

Believe it or not, we have still more bookings...even though the last newsletter came out only a few weeks ago! (See Bookings below).

I look forward to a wonderful summer!

Blessings,
Cathryn Sullivan

NEW REGISTRATION PROCEDURES!!!!

It's been almost a year since we opened our new studio (June 4th is our birthday!), and we have finally streamlined our registration procedures!! It's taken us a little bit to find the best method for our registration but we think we have it!! It's very important to follow the new procedures so that your registration will be considered.

To register for the June and July camps, as well as the upcoming Howard Meltzer Seminar, please go to our website at www.cathrynsullivan.com and click the register tab. Once on the register page you will need to fill out the provided form with ALL requested information and click "submit". The form will automatically come to us so there will be no need to e-mail your request to the 4classreg e-mail address.

This is step one in our new registration renovation J. After registering, we will then need you to click on the Express Payment Form which is also located under the register tab. Please fill out that form and fax to our office so that your payment information is on file and ready to go once your registration is approved (if you already have a card on file, there is no need to re-send). Due to the quick turn, we will not be able to call to remind you to send the payment form. If it is not on file when we are ready to confirm your student in the class, we will need to go to the next student on the list.

Hopefully we will all find this process much more efficient!

REGISTRATION WILL NOT BEGIN UNTIL 9:00 A.M. ON FRIDAY, MAY 28.
IF YOUR FORM IS RECEIVED BEFORE 9:00 A.M., IT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

We realize that in some instances time off work needs to be arranged or vacations are being worked around, so we wanted to give you a full day to look over the schedule and decide which classes work best before registering.

I meant to send out the Singing Classes with my schedule last week and somehow, it didn't happen, so here it is:

FOUR CLASSES STARTING MONDAY, MAY 10, MAY 17, 24 & JUNE 7. Please check out schedule page for more information for classes and times! Singing 103 This class is a build off of Singing Cuz its Fun 101/102. We will prepare a full song to sing for YouTube and for a showcase for our friends and family. This class also focuses on stage presence, and developing the voice.

Also, I have gotten hundreds of emails concerning May's Film schedule. REMEMBER, I AM IN L.A. and the studio is not open right now. We will be in the office next week putting the lists together and sending out confirmations. Debbie is working on each one of your emails as we speak. Please be patient till next week when we get the lists put together for classes. Summer schedule will come out at that time! Thanks so much! I look forward to seeing you guys and working with you soon!

Sincerely, Cathryn Sullivan and Staff

Hey There, Actors and Actresses and those of you who love them! - May, 2010

I am so sorry this is just coming out, but I have been very busy here in L.A. working with my students on auditions, callbacks and jobs and also going to fun things like the Nickolodean Choice Awards & the VIP party afterwards where I hung out with agents and casting directors and caught up with Logan Henderson, Savannah Gipson(Big time Rush), Hung out with Debby Ryan(Suite Life on Deck) and her momma. I also ran into Demi Lovato where she introduced me to her new beau (Joe Jonas)!

I was so excited that Selena Gomez got "Best Actress in a TV series"! Wasn't she so adorable on her acceptance speech? I had supper with Mandy, Selena's Momma a few nights prior. I've had lots of fun times with all of my friends out here in La La Land. I also went to see Demi's show "Sonny with a Chance."

Selena at the Nick awards Demi Lovato on the set of "Grey's anatomy"

I even got to coach Demi Lovato on her "Grey's Anatomy" role where she is going to stun the world with this role! I have had a lot of my students book roles this past 2 months and I can't wait to brag a little...Oh, who am I kidding...I'll be bragging a lot! My students were GREAT this season!!! (See Bookings!...and there are still some more that are in callback situations that I can't talk about yet!)

MAY SCHEDULE

May and first of week of June's schedule is in this newsletter. Please check out and review how to register so that your child can have a place in classes next month. May classes will be charged the first week of May. Prices are lower than normal because of less hours, but if you sign up for the MAY classes, it will knock off the rust and put you in a good place for Summer classes.

SUMMER classes are coming out soon, and will have some cool things including group guitar lessons, commercial classes and new master classes. I have listened to your requests and will not be charging Summer classes until mid-May (to help everyone out) but registration for this should be very, very soon. (It was going to come out with this newsletter, but I had to firm a few more things up and wanted to get registration on MAY started).

CATHERINE STROUD, who is casting TWO pilots for NICKOLODEAN right now is coming May 22-23. She wants to look at my developing talent! (She's already looking at a few of my students now for her show!) HOWARD MELTZER has started casting a pilot for DISNEY too! Howard will be coming to our studio July 24-25th!

NEW! I have a new class called "LESS IS MORE". It will only have 10-12 students in the class, (less students, more attention for a little more money). Check it out if you are interested. It is a chance for your child to get more attention in the classroom.

MAY SCHEDULE & SUMMER SCHEDULE- I decided to release them separately so that you don't have to pay for both May and the summer sessions at the same time (per some of your requests). May classes will be charged within the next 2 weeks. Summer session won't be charged till late May (after May 15). There are one on one consultations at the end of the month. I wanted to get those before I left for LA and I'm sorry I was unable to, but there will be some times and days to choose from the first of June.

I had a great time in California. I almost always do, but I'm excited about getting back to my hometown state and developing some more actors. Look at my booking section. My students ROCKED the last couple of months even though there is less work for actors right now!

CONGRATS!

Blessings,
Cathryn Sullivan

APRIL 2010 NEWSLETTER UPDATE

Hey ALL!!! This is just an update to let you know that we WILL have Classes in MAY!...Including a Film 1 & Film 3intensive With Ben Sullivan on MAY 15-16!(I was going to make it May 8-9 and realized that was Mother's Day...thanks to one of you guys...so I moved it!) There will be also be FILM 2, 3, 4, 5-NEW MASTER 2 & MASTER CLASSES TOO to get everyone back in shape! Singing classes will be starting back too! DETAILS & REGISTRATION COMING SOON!PLEASE SAVE THE DATE THOUGH!

I have been working non-stop in L.A. with several of my students and can't wait to tell you all about it! (I coached Demi Lovato on her Grey's Anatomy rolewhere she plays what they think is a Schizophrenic and was on hold to go to be Selena Gomez's acting coachon her new movie "Monte Carlo" but that didn't work out THIS time although her Mom said she was going to try and get me on one of her other movie sets soon).

I'm also getting to have some fun while doing business like when I went to the Nick Choice Awards and the VIP party afterwards with Jennifer Patredis (LA's CESD agent) and got to see a bunch of my students WIN and present! (Some of them were YOUR teachers! Wasn't that cool?!) THREE out of FOUR who were nominated for Best TV show had MY students in them and SELENA GOMEZ won Best Actress in a TV show!..and there was some tough competition! I can't tell you how proud I was!!!!

I am ALSO working on the Summer Schedule. I thought I'd have it all by now, but I have some cool things planned for the Summer and had to nail down some things by having lunch meetings with Agents, Managers and Casting directors!

Some dates to block off are MAY 22ND! CATHERINE STROUD, who is casting Nickolodean's "Super Ninjah" and another NICK pilot right now (and whom some of my students are in callbacks for right now) is coming to my place that day! She is very cool, smart and very nice! You will looooove her. TARA COET, agent at Kim Dawson will also be there to take notes and check out developing talent as well as her own! This is going to be available to Film 2 and above this time! They want to see 'developing' talent as well as those that are READY!

JUNE 26-27...HUUUUGE Seminar! More details on that one as soon as I get all of them...But Agents, Managers, etc coming that weekend.

JULY 24-25 ALSO, HOWARD MELTZERis coming back, casting director for "I'm in the Band", "Hannah Montana" and is casting the "Billion Dollar Freshman" pilot right now for Disney XD.

We are going to have a rockin' Summer at my place! We will be adding a COMMERCIAL class with Vicki Baumann in JULY and Guitar Classes with Ben Sullivan!

I've also been able to get scripts for all the latest movie, pilots and guest starring roles and I'm learning all the new trends while I'm out here in L.A. Every single time I come out here, I think I know it all and then....BAM! I learn some more!

I love and miss you all. I will see you soon! Please don't email me back right now as I am trying to put the schedule together and nail down everything so I can't really tell you exactly when things are going to be (except for those that are already set like those above) until I have everything perfect! I still am in LA for a little while longer! I have some important callbacks for starring roles coming up and that is really important for now.

BLESSINGS AND LOVE TO YOU ALL!
CATHRYN SULLIVAN

FEBRUARY 2010

Hi there, ACTORS AND ACTRESSES and those who love them!

WE are not risking anyone's lives to go to ACTING CLASS today (Thursday) , although if it were a seminar and an industry guest had flown in from Los Angeles, I'd be singing a different tune! Especially since I have teenagers who drive to my classes themselves, I have to cancel classes due to the snow and ice activity....and SINCE you have a day off, enjoy the snow, but remember to rehearse and practice your scripts for next class. This is a perfect time to use this time to benefit your acting career! These classes will be rescheduled for THURSDAY, MARCH 11TH.

WOW! What a series! The students are progressing so well in class. I have been really happy with how far they have come! I have lots of determined, driven actors. Talent is only a part of it. Skill, Patience and Drive are even more important than Talent to help an actor or actress succeed.

GREAT SEMINAR! What a GREAT seminar/workshop we had the Weekend of January 30-31! Stephanie Laffin, casting director for "House", a show that has won several emmy's over the years was so inspirational! We were so lucky to have such a spectacular person come work with each one of your children and my students. Many of you have already emailed me about how happy you were with the workshop and I really appreciate all of your feedback! See general comments by Stephanie Laffin, Casting director for the Emmy winning TV show "HOUSE" below*. Specific comments have and are being discussed in class.

GOOD MORNING, TEXAS!I'm going to be on Good Morning Texas on Monday, Feb 15 as part of a series they are doing on Child Actors. Tara Coet, Director of Kim Dawson Children's division will also be speaking sometime next week as well as Stevie Miller, Logan Miller's momma (Logan is the star of "I'm in the Band" and many of your child's Film 1/ Film 3 teacher! It's been a long time since I've been in FRONT of the cameras! Uh-oh...Guess I'll have to take my own advice!

I JUST RECEIVED A WONDERFUL TEXT FROM A PRODUCER ABOUT MY STUDENTS!: A producer for the movie "Go-Kart Girl" (who's daughter has taken classes from me for over 4 years) just sent me a text. Their first day of shooting is TODAY.....in the SNOW...and she cast a lot of the students from my Kid Pro class....And this was her sweet text: "Your Kids and Moms rock! Everyone showed up in this gorgeous snow to work and I'm in heaven knowing that I can trust these actors!! I'm just sitting here thinking how blessed all these kids are for your influence in our lives. Because of your passion, we are all here! I would never be doing this if it weren't for you. Thanks! It is so fun!"

BOOKINGS! Lots of bookings all over the country. Those will come out in my next newsletter with the new classes on them.

THERE ARE A FEW SPOTS LEFT IN THE MICHAEL WELCH/PARENT SEMINAR COMING UP NEXT WEEKEND!...and a few spots left in the Film 1 and Film 3 intensive weekend classes. (There are TWO film 2 intensives that are full but we welcome you on the waiting list!)

PARENT SEMINAR!:
My parent seminar is going to be quite unique! The speakers are all Moms in the business who are also professionals in the business as well. That gives us all a very unique and understanding viewpoint!

MANDY TEEFEY! -MANDY is the key speaker for the parent seminar. She is SELENA GOMEZ's Mom AND a producer as well.

TARA COET! Director of the Children and Teen division for Broadcast at the KIM DAWSON agency will also be a speaker and is a Mom of an actress (NOEL COET) and an agent.

CATHRYN SULLIVAN- I am a Mom of an actor, (CODY LINLEY) and am also an acting coach.

This PARENT SEMINAR is coming up next weekend, Feb 20-21! We still have a few spots left in the Michael Welch/Parent seminar. Question and Answer period will be included. If you are interested in the spots left, please email us your request at 4classreg@gmail.com. Questions, email CathySully@gmail.com

Below are the spots left: There are several spots left in ACTING FOR CAMERA group for Michael Welch and for BEGINNERS group for the Parent Seminar. (If you know someone who is interested in getting their child involved but not sure about the process, this is a good seminar for them to go to).

*NOTES from the Stephanie Laffin Seminar:
Stephanie watched and evaluated each individual child giving them specific comments and direction on how to improve their scene. I was awe-struck when my students, YOUR children, took her direction so well and in some cases even exceeded our expectations. I was very proud! The students and I have been discussing Stephanie's specific comments that she had for each student and my own analysis of each performance during class this past week. There were a few classes where we ran out of time THIS week and will be talking about it THIS week. I absolutely loved her honesty! She tells it 'how it is' but was very gentle about it at the same time.

BELOW, I have also included Stephanie's general quotes for you to review and use to gain insight about things she looks for and wants in children/teens as a casting director for an Emmy nominated show.

General Comments made by Stephanie Laffin along with my input:
WHAT SHE WANTS: "Give me an opinion of who you are and what you are saying. What are you feeling? Make sure when you speak, it as if you are saying it for the first time", says SL.
When you are in an audition, even though you've rehearsed it a lot, it should still sound spontaneous! When you are on set, there may be twelve takes and every time it needs to sound like you just "thought of it". Don't be lazy!

SHE LIKES STRONG CHOICES: "Commit to your ideas, even if they are wrong. I HATE wishy-washy", says SL. I continue to say, "Make strong choices." If they are wrong, most industry professionals will be impressed that you tried something specific and strong. It is a sign they are interested when they give you direction. If the student is able to adapt and be directable, then there is more of a chance for a callback or booking! "No one wants to go to a movie and say 'it was fine'. FINE IS A DIRTY WORD", says SL. I loved it when she said that. Be interesting! Stand out! Make strong choices!

PUTTING YOUR PERSONALITY IN IT: "I want to see what your personality is like and what you can put into the scene", Says SL. When you are playing a character, put parts of your personality into the scene. Also, be ready to interview. For example, when you come up and she asks you how fourth grade is...THAT is an interview! Many students lacked the interview skills it took to make an impression saying only one word "Good"or "I hate fourth grade" and "My dog is annoying". We have been talking about that in class this week as it is imperative that they are likeable in the interview, so the casting director will feel confident in showing her producers someone who will be fun to work with, not someone who is negative or doesn't know how to talk with adults. Interview skills are a must!

BEING LIKABLE: Up till now, we have had casting directors who have mainly been looking for regular stars on shows and have mostly wanted "like-able" characters. Stephanie said that some of the characters who have guest starring roles on HOUSE are NOT likeable. That was new for all of us! Now, one has to figure out how to be likeable in the interview and be a unlikeable character when it's called for.

TOO BROAD A STROKE: Stephanie referred to those who went too "big" as, "You are painting too broad a stroke". Some of the students didn't realize what this meant when she said it, and we've discussed this in some classes but if this is one of the comments on your child's evaluation, this is what it meant: It's important to be real and not go too big, stagey or looking like you are "acting" even though you are. Some students who got nervous went back to the broad-style acting even though their class work isn't that way. I think with more experience with seminars and being in front of industry professionals, the students usually calm down and figure that these important casting directors and agents are just like everyone else....Human Beings who really are nice and want you to do your best!

FOCUS: "It's important to focus", said SL. Although we work on this a lot in class, especially during firm ups, there were several students who would look at Stephanie or myself as they worked on their scene. It is important to focus on the reader and not look at the ones who are watching your work.

RESEARCH: You should not just research your character and what he/she is feeling and doing, but also what character you are playing opposite. "If your character is playing opposite 'Kutner' in our show, you need to figure out how you and he will be able to find the truth together." Go to www.imdb.com when you have auditions for guest starring roles and see what characters you are playing against. Then, watch the show to see what choices will work.

YELLING IS CHEAP: It is Stephanie's opinion that when you yell, you lose power. That is what their show is about. It is not that way with all shows, but that is how she feels about "House". It wouldn't be a good idea to yell on an audition for her. You can have determination and intensity without yelling and for her show it is more powerful. You also need to know how to yell when it's called for because there are plenty other times it is needed...just usually not for Stephanie's show.

CRYING ON CUE: I loved this one. "When you cry in a scene, you should come to it organically and get there from things that happen that propel you to cry rather than thinking 'I need to cry here'". THE HAIR, BRACES, EYELINER AND TAN THING: I heard Stephanie, like Sharon Lieblein and Christian Kaplan continually comment about my girls' hair, makeup and braces AGAIN! Girls and guys, please get your hair out of your face. I can't tell you how many times this weekend I saw only ONE EYE of a student as the other one was covered up by hair! She ended up asking several people to pull back their hair.

GIRLS, PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN SAKE, DO NOT PUT EYELINER ON! Over and over, my guests and myself explain to girls that the eyeliner thing does not work in this business. You need to look younger than you are, not older and Stephanie said we are not looking for, "Sharpie around your eyes". Also there are many people who have permanent retainers glued to their mouths by orthodontists. Realize that when you glue things in your child's mouth, it could very well affect their speech and keep them from being considered for projects. Braces on top of the teeth are also a huge concern. There are agents who won't even see or TAKE a child with braces on the front side of their teeth. Look into Linguals or invisiline if you must have things happen with their teeth. There are orthodontists who will work with you! Don't let them talk you into things when it will affect your child's career! Pet peeves of Stephanie: She also hates super white teeth and orange tans. She wants the character on her show to look real. There are other casting directors who LIKE really white teeth. A balanced look would be the best thing here. (Don't go super white).

IMPROV: Stephanie thinks it's imperative for actors/actresses to know improvisation (which is what our Michael Welch Seminar is all about next month!) She said it helps on the sets, for auditions, in interviews and in life. She said Hugh Laurie (Star of HOUSE) is great at improv. "He can work moment to moment." I couldn't agree more. Improv is under-rated in Dallas.

MOST IMPORTANT: "The audition is about connecting with the reader. Talk to your mother (the reader) with more familiarity as if you know her", says SL. If you have a scene with your mother, you need to talk to the reader like she is really your own mother, even if it's Tom or Katie or even someone you don't know at all. We have great readers for our seminars. Many times in auditions, however, the readers are bland and boring and will not give you anything to work with. It is up to the actor to use their imagination and make it work. That is your job. You have to be able to do that without it throwing you off.

PUTTING THE SCENE TOGETHER: "Stringing it together is important", said SL. The character and choices for the scene have got to make sense as a whole. 8x10's: Stephanie doesn't get the "Manufactured brooding look" that usually works well for theatrical 8x10s although many casting directors and agents do. She also, like most casting directors, does not like it when you look older than your headshot or your hair is short and your headshot portrays long hair. She seemed a little turned off by the "glam" headshots as well. "Just get a shot of what you look like RIGHT NOW on your best day," is what Stephanie Laffin explained in regards to headshots. I think that is good advice and since her show and her group either are nominated for emmy's or win emmy's, we should listen! That's it! Specific comments are being discussed in class. I love having these seminars as I learn so much

**The HAROLD By Michael Welch
February 19-21, 2010
Teacher: Michael Welch, (who plays "Mike Newton" in Twilight, NewMoon, Eclipse and many other roles) explains "THE HAROLD". )

Many actors are skeptical about exploring improvisational work. They consider it to separate from the kind of acting that will help them in film, television, theatre, and most importantly, the audition room. They assume that because its' structure and process are different from more traditional training techniques that it's impractical; somehow less useful than emotional preparation and scene work. Or they don't think they have the natural or developed talent to be creative or humorous without written text.

In my experience, there are two ways to approach improvisation. The more well known method requires its' participants to actively search for humor, creativity, and approval from the audience. You will see this kind of work on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" The way I teach is about developing a different and valuable set of tools for ALL types, styles, and genres of acting. When taught and utilized properly improv is not separate from acting, it enhances it. The skills that are developed and crafted can be used to an actor's great advantage in scene work, monologues, auditions, cold readings, film, TV, theatre, and voice over.

The HAROLD is a long form improvisation that was developed by Del Close in 1967. I learned the exercise from Gary Austin (founder of the legendary Groundlings comedy troupe), who learned it directly from Mr. Close. In other words, the way I teach it is almost identical to how it was originally developed, aside from a few tweaks implemented over the past 43 years. The HAROLD is about following impulses, committing to physicality, owning the space you're in, exploring, listening, playing, having fun, and finding freedom within structure, which is what acting is all about. There is no pressure to be funny, emotional, creative, or entertaining, but you will discover that these things grow organically out of the exercise. It is great for actors of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. It will stretch you, challenge you, and hopefully inspire and invigorate you (and me).

I look forward to working with you. I look forward to playing with you. And I hope this can be a constructive and enjoyable journey for all of us. HAVE FUN!!

Hopefully this was helpful and you will keep this is case something comes up! As always, dream big!

Blessings,

Cathryn Sullivan

DECEMBER 2009

ACTING FOR FILM- WINTER SCHEDULE 2010

Hi Actors and Actresses and Those who LOVE them!

DID YA'LL SEE THE LOGANS?! THEY BOTH LOOKED GREAT ON THEIR OWN SHOWS this week! I am excited and am filled with joy right now! I just got finished watching a sneak preview of both LOGAN HENDERSON and LOGAN MILLER's new shows for 2010, one on Nickelodeon (BIG TIME RUSH) and the other on Disney XD (I'M IN THE BAND). I was so proud of them! STUDENTS: Was it cool for you to watch your teachers on TV with their own shows? Both Logans were TEACHERS of mine for around 2 years (Many of you had them as Film 1 and Film 3 students) and they were students of mine for 4 years. In fact, both Logan's were in the same Film 2 class performing the same Film 2 work as my Film 2 class is doing THIS WEEK!!!! The Logans have paid their dues and are on their way! I bet both shows will be big hits, but best of all...LOGAN and LOGAN looked GREAT AND LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE HAVING FUN AND LIVING THEIR DREAM!

The Logan's worked hard to get where they are today with being stars on a new show. 2010 is gonna rock for them! To reach your dreams, it takes talent, but also- imagination, listening and paying attention in class and staying IN class (Logan Henderson took 3 classes a week for six months), a good work ethic, thinking outside the box to be able to stand out in the crowd, patience, persistance, a real love of acting, and a little bit of luck. It also takes a good team effort with both Child and Parent.

PARENTS- Sometimes Parents do not understand that they play a huge part in this mix whether they want to be or not. Without a parent who cares and tries to be knowledgeable about their child's career, a child actress or actor does not stand a chance. FEBRUARY 20-21, we will have a big parent seminar which will include Selena Gomez's mother, MANDY TEEFEY who will talk about what it takes to be a parent of a star. (Mandy is also a producer!) Please make sure that you make this weekend a priority. Think of it as a "must" to help your child's career! That weekend will be coupled with actor MICHAEL WELCH teaching my students. Mike Welch plays Mike Newton in from the "Twilight" movie series! He will be doing the "Harold" with the students that weekend (more details later).

"HOUSE" CASTING DIRECTOR COMING! The casting director on "HOUSE" STEPHANIE LAFFIN is coming to the studio January 30-31 to teach a seminar! She has been nominated herself for both an emmy and artios award for her work and the show itself has won many Emmys! We will learn from her point of view what it takes to be on a TV show that has won so much attention. Be sure and sign up, but We won't charging for this seminar till after the new year (Jan 2, 2010).

BOOKINGS!!! Lots of bookings! My students are booking...all working all over the country- L.A., New York, Louisiana and more. Check out the "Bookings" section for details!

WINTER SCHEDULE! To be considered a serious actor, one must always be working on their craft. Classes begin mid-January for the winter session 2010. Send in your requests to 4classreg@gmail.com and please go by the sign-up procedure to make sure your child gets registered for the winter session and upcoming seminars. YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED UNTIL JANUARY 2, 2010! (Exception: Christmas Break intensives).

If you have a question for me specifically, email to CathySully@gmail.com. I have taken my email back and it is now my private email address. No one but me sees the emails that come to that email address, so feel free to chat with me about whatever you would like. If you are going to L. A. for pilot season, there are two classes only (cuz most of you are going Feb 1st) on SATURDAY AT 3:00-5:30 Jan 16 and 23.

A NEW FILM 1 CLASS during Christmas Break!- Those of you who have friends who've been trying to get into the program can take a new Film 1 intensive THIS MONTH. Our Dec 28-30th Film 1 with Vicki is full, so we have made a new Film 1, Sunday, Dec 27-Wednesday, Dec 30th during CHRISTMAS BREAK from 2:00-5:00 with the very popular BEN SULLIVAN teaching! You will even get $5.00 off one of YOUR classes if they use your name in their signup for this Film 1 class (one name per sign-up). There are also some other CHRISTMAS BREAK INTENSIVES (FILM 3, SONGWRITING, SINGING CLASS). Check them out under "Christmas Break intensives".

CLASSES- I have enjoyed classes this Fall. Besides my regular Film 1- New Master 2 series, my Masters have done scenes from Glee (learning how to hold your own and stand out in an audition where you have to sing, dance and act), The Closer (how to play a sweet schizophrenic), The Mentalist (sarcastic and fun comedy while eating apples and walking) and The Cleaner. We are about to head into our romance series.

Many of you have asked me about when to get an agent. Please see the special section regarding this subject in the newsletter below.

I am looking forward to seeing what 2010 holds for my students. 2009 has been so inspirational and a year of growing and gaining strength for me!

Blessings and Joy to all of you,
Cathryn Sullivan

INTERESTING TRIVIA:
FORMER STUDENT BARRY WATSON was my student when I worked here in Dallas back in 1988-89. I took him to California in 1989 for five weeks along with other teenagers and helped get him his first agent in California. I was 7-8 months pregnant with Cody Linley when I took him. Now, he's stars in the TV show "SAMANTHA WHO" as Todd and was the Star of "What About Brian" (played Brian) and "7th Heaven" as Matt. He also was the star in Boogeyman where Cody Linley did voiceover work. Cody and Barry have never met although they have been in close contact many times and even did a movie together.

FAQ ABOUT AGENTS:
After the Mitchell Gossett seminar I had a lot of parents approaching me, wondering if their child is ready for an agent. I have been teaching acting for many years and have come to know when an actor has developed the consisitency and confidence (along with ability and maturity) to be ready to get an agent and start auditioning regularly.

If you ask, I will be honest. So only ask if you are willing to hear my honest opinion. I love my students and don't want to see anyone get discouraged by taking that leap before they are ready. Is it possible to get an agent before you are ready? Yes, in many cases an agent will pick up an actor before they are fully developed. For instance, there were several of my students who did an outstanding job in front of the agents because they had lots of practice and one on one time with me or my aids to prepare. However, in the classroom setting the student may still be developing and not consistently performing at their top potential.

So, what does this mean for the actor? If an agent picks up an actor before they are fully ready to be competitive in the market it can lead to much frustration and disappointment. Casting directors often don't have time to see every child for an audition, so they ask that the agent only send their top talent in a certain age range. If you are not ready yet, you will not fall into that category. Also, if the actor isn't ready to compete with other, more developed actors in the market, it can lead to much frustration at not ever progressing beyond the initial audition, and the casting director may remember the less than stellar performance and not want to see the actor again. When an actor doesn't get callbacks or favorable feedback, the agent will be less likely to send them out.

I take great pride in the reputation that I have built with the agencies, both locally and in L.A., as they trust that I won't send them anyone who is not ready to compete with the best of the best. I will not recommend anyone who I do not feel is consistently performing to the top of their game. I know this upsets many of you, but I can assure you I do it out of care and concern for the actor as well as the agent. I don't want anyone to get discouraged by rushing things and not take the time to reach their full potential. Thank you for understanding. I love my actors and want what's best for them over the long haul.

I DO LOVE MY ACTORS AND ACTRESSES!

Blessings and Joy,

WOW! WHAT A SUMMER! This has been the best summer EVER!! We have had over 65 classes (Film 1-Masters) this summer, THREE huge seminars with some of the most powerful casting directors and heads of casting directors in Hollywood!  Of course, we also have had many buff-ups, a Marketing and Monologue class!  It has been wonderful!

KIDS CAME FROM ALL OVER THE STATE AND COUNTRY! We had children and teenagers come from all over the state of Texas (Houston, San Antonio, Rio Grande Valley, Austin, Corpus Christie, and Abilene) as well as all over the country (Idaho, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Florida, and Oklahoma.)  It's been an honor for me to have so many people come from so far away to take classes at my studio.  I appreciate all of your commitment and dedication!  Thanks to all of you for sharing your child and teen with us!  It has been so much FUN!

BOOKINGS! My students are booking up a STORM!  It's so COOL!  BIG stuff, too!  Can't wait for you to check out the BOOKINGS section of this newsletter!

FALL CLASSES!!! There is also info on Fall Classes AND TWO big seminars coming up!
NEW CLASSES!!- We have new classes this Fall. I have a HOME SCHOOL class on Thursday mornings. Many of you have asked...We will try it out!

SINGING CLASS- There has also been a need this year for many of you to have bars of music ready for movie
and pilot auditions, so We have a wonderful singing coach,
BRIDGETTE HAMMERS  that is going to be teaching group classes on Mondays helping actors reach their goals. She will have all kinds of music for you to choose from too! Cool, eh?

WEBISODE CLASS-ALSO, we have RONDA JAMES who is going to teach "How to create, write and produce
your own webisodes" with a DVD given of your work at the end of the session. Both of these classes have awesome people teaching them and I can't wait for you to get to know them!

PARENT SEMINAR- One is a Parent Seminar: SELENA GOMEZ's mom, Mandy Teefy, is writing a book about raising a teen star.  She and I will be putting that seminar together for possibly October 17th-18th. She and I will be discussing that when I get to L.A.
***SAVE THE DATE!***

HUGE SEMINAR on NOVEMBER 14-15!  I am producing a HUGE Seminar where top agent
MITCHELL GOSSETT
of UNITED TALENT AGENCY (where celebrities like Rachel McAdams and Johnny Depp
are represented) and MELISSA BERGER (Lead agent at CESD agency for Kids, Teens and Young Adults), as well as ERIN KASZYNSKI (Child and Teen Agent for film, TV and commercials at Kim Dawson Agency) will be here.  Even if you have an agent in L.A., Mitchell Gossett is a GREEEEAT teacher and you will learn sooooooo much from his teaching - I Loooooooove him!!!  He's got the magic touch.  He's the one who took Miley Cyrus from a native Tennessee girl and helped make her a super-star millionaire and has been her only L.A. agent up until a few months ago. He is also the agent of Cody Linley (Starstruck, Dancing with the Stars, Hannah Montana), Taylor Momsen (Gossip Girl, Spy Kids 2, How the Grinch Stole Christmas) Victoria Justice (Zoey 101, Title character of Nick's new pilot "The Untitled Victoria Justice Pilot"), Madison Pettis (Cory in the House, Game Plan), Chelsea Staub (regular
on Jonas). I've known Mitchell for about 8 years and he has continued to rise in power and knowledge, and I always learn from him every time he comes to TEXAS because he is a bundle of knowledge!! He and Melissa will talk with Parents too.  Some say THIS seminar is the best one all year!

MELISSA BERGER will be teaching voiceover classes.  Many in the biz consider her the best voiceover agent for Teens, Kids and Young adults in the business.  Big stars continue to use her even after they've moved on to the BIG FIVE adult agencies because she's so good at what she does.  Cody Linley just received a 2009 Audie Award for his voiceover work as "Jesus" this year for "Word of Promise" - thanks to Melissa!

Look for IMPORTANT INFORMATION  in the section about Mitchell and Melissa including Prep Dates for the workshop where each student will pick a script or monologue and partner to do for the workshop. Prep Dates will be Sunday, November 1 and almost EVERY NIGHT the whole week before they come, so be sure you look to see what works best for your child. The whole process is quite exhilarating!

COMMENTS from Sharon Lieblein, Christian Kaplan and Howard Meltzer are included in this newsletter, along with some of the things that are important to them!  I know I've been promising this to you, but you guys kept me working 13-15 hour days at the studio!!! Seriously, I've worked many 8:00am-10:00pm days and, although I'm a bit tired, it's been fun. There is soooo much knowledge and information in those pages that have quotes from these powerful people. Read them even if your child did not take those seminars. It is like a piece of gold just being handed to you!

Those seminars were so successful!  Sharon was so impressed  with my students that she auditioned and put 13
of my students on tape the day of the seminar for projects she is casting, and Erin Kaszinsky from the
Kim Dawson Agency came to the Howard Meltzer Seminar where she fell in love with several of my students and decided to interview 12 of my students for possible representation (and has signed many of them)!!

I just got a new MOVIE poster to put on my wall.  Miss ASHLEY BOETTCHER saved me a poster from her movie premiere. Her movie came out this month, "Aliens in the Attic." It was cute!  Hope you got to see it!  She is on the poster!  CLICK HERE to read more about Ashley and her new movie.

I will be teaching several classes in the Fall when I come back from L.A.  Please take a look at the schedule and send in your child/teen's registration.  Theresa and Debbie will be taking care of it while I boogie to L.A. and take care of my son, Cody - after I run to San Marcus and check on my other two boys, Scott and Ben.  All THREE boys send their love to you guys.  They want you to know that they really enjoyed being a part of the Summer of 2009 at Cathryn Sullivan's Acting for Film school.

Blessings and Joy to all of you,
Cathryn Sullivan

BIG MOVIE NEWS!  BRYCE CASS booked a Columbia Pictures film "BATTLE: L.A." starring Aaron Eckhart. It films in Louisiana and Bryce will work from August (He's already there!) through December and it's a THREE picture deal filled with aliens, guns, choppers and lots of crying for Bryce! YAY! He and Terry are having a grand time on that set!

PAYLEIGH KNIGHT is hot right now!  She booked a part on CSI and then, she booked a SAG feature film called "Barry Minko."  WOW!  You are cool, Payleigh!

CODY LINLEY won an Audie Award for "Inspirational/Faith-Based non-fiction 2009" for his part as "JESUS" in the WORD OF PROMISE / NEW GENERATION series.  Cody's special one-hour episode for "Hanah Montana" had over 6.9 million viewers. It was the most watched cable show of the week and beat out most prime time shows that night!

Just this week, I found out GLENN MCCUEN booked the NICKELODEAN PILOT "Untitled Bugliari and McLaughlin Project" that Sharon Lieblein cast!  He booked the role of Aloe.  (This is the project that many of you went on tape for and some got called back for roles like Bucket, Skinner and Piper).  He also booked a part on "MARMADUKE", the 20th Century Fox film that Christian Kaplan cast.  This is the film that shot in Canada. Christian was working on it when he came here to do his workshop.  Remember him asking if everyone had their passport?!  Well, GLENN had a passport AND
he was perfect for the part!  How cool is that?!

JULIANNA KELLER booked the part of "Young Grace" on the set of one of MY favorite TV shows, "Saving Grace", (TNT) and when she got on that set, she found out another one of my students was there that week - JESSICA MECHLER!  TWO of my students on that set at the same time! YEA! I like it!

ROBERT HAYES
has been busy!  He booked a SAG McDonald commercial, a NIKE commercial and a basketball film.  TOM MADEN was also in this film as one of the leads AND he also did a short.

JESSICA BANUELOS booked the Film "Jesus Prodigal Son" and Up and Down" (independent film).

AIDEN VITELA MARTINEZ did a Disney XD Promo spot and it's cute!

JEREMY BECCERA booked an indie film in San Antonio, a Chuckie Cheese commercial, an HEB commercial, AND a film in Houston! WOOO!

COLT MILLS booked a short film called "Changing."

Sierra plays Promise. I

CAMERYN GRASSANOVITS had the female lead in the web-series "Emergence".

MCKALEY MILLER and CAS ROONEY booked a Red Baron Commercial.

*MORE INFO ON SINGING 101, WEBISODE AND HOMESCHOOL ACTING CLASS:
SINGING 101 is an introduction to singin
g. The focus will be finding a comfortable song to sing for auditions. Whether they consider themselves a rocker, pop star, rapper, or a country singer, we will have a song for them! We will work on the importance of singing from the diaphragm and using the voice as an instrument, while using a section of a different song each week. At the end of this class, the students will be able to sing with more
confidence and understand how the voice works. (There is also a SINGING 102!)

*INTRO TO WEB VIDEOS- Led by a professional web developer (She does MY website!) with nearly 15 years experience, this class will give your child the unique opportunity to work on the "Other" side of the camera and learn the basics of web-based video "movie" production in a kid-friendly environment.  Working in teams, students will be introduced to brainstorming and pitching ideas, story-boarding, writing, pre-production planning, lighting concepts and shooting and video editing techniques, as they develop original 2-3 minute webisodes from concept to completion. Student webisodes will be featured on the web, and each student will receive a DVD of his or her work
at the completion of the course. Students need only to bring an imagination and willingness to learn and share. Equipment provided. For more info, contact RJ at jamesinc3@gmail.com  or call 469-774-3103.

*HOMESCHOOL ACTING CLASS: I am offering a class for homeschoolers, but will continue to use my building block method (Film 1-master classes). This will be a mixed level class with students learning whatever level they
are on.  For more details on my building block method, go to www.cathrynsullivan.com and click on "Classes".

BELOW ARE COMMENTS MADE BY CHRISTIAN KAPLAN, HEAD OF CASTING AT 20TH CENTURY FOX AT THE SEMINAR FROM JUNE, SHARON LIEBLEIN, HEAD OF CASTING AT NICKELODEAN AT HER SEMINAR IN JULY AND HOWARD MELTZER, CASTING DIRECTOR OF "HANNAH MONTANA" and "I'M WITH THE BAND."  Read and learn!

Cathryn Sullivan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHRISTIAN KAPLAN SEMINAR NOTES  (HEAD OF CASTING AT 20TH CENTURY FOX)

GENERAL NOTES:

- Make sure to read the ENTIRE script if it's given.

COMMENTS (as noted by Erin Kaszynski, Kim Dawson Agent):

- If the casting director is gracious enough to let you pick which scene you want to do, be sure to choose the one
that is most comfortable to you.

- Make sure to print the actual sides and don't pull from the script, as the sides change all the time.

- It is important to make decisions/choices in a scene - don't give up the power.

- Don't overly gesture with your hands and watch head bobbing.

- Be mindful of things like rocking back and forth, twirling hair, fidgeting and constantly clearning your throat.

- Don't wear things that perpetuate fidgeting, like a scarf because it makes it difficult to focus on your acting.

- ALWAYS know your lines for an audition. Be prepared.

- Keep hair out of face.  Makeup is not good.  The point is to try and look natural.

- Think about the choices you make and if they make sense for your character.

- Make "selfish" choices and take control of the scene.  Don't let your partner bring you down in the scene.

- Understand the genre you're in (comedy, drama, etc.) and play it that way.  Be sure personality is appropriate for the scene. Know your character's location in the scene.

- Be prepared for improv in a scene and when someone throws imrpov at you, go with it.

- Make sure to bring in your prop if the casting director requests it.

- Pay attention to body language.  If you aren't enjoying yourself it will show.

- If there is a word you can't pronounce, then ask.

- Understand the emotions of the character and connect with the character.

- Understand the context is so important!

- Be careful not to anticipate the lines of the other character.

- Always be sure to have a headshot and resume for an audition and that your contact information is on the resume.

- When the reader says a word and you are to repeat the word, be sure to say it just like the reader did.

- Come in confident and keep confidence.  Being wishy washy implies insecurity.

- Don't add dialogue that isn't in the scene.

- And most of all - don't rush the scene.

GENERAL NOTES (by Erin Kaszynski, Kim Dawson Agent):

- Work on your diction and articulation.

- Be careful of sarcastic banter with casting director when in workshops.

- Own the scene.  Don't feed off the energy of your reader.

- If a casting director asks for an adjustment in the scene, and you don't understand, ask for clarification.

- Don't be too actor-y. (CS-In other words-don't "act", just "be" the character.)

- Understand your charater's goal in the scene.

- Be careful not to over-act. (CS-Again, if you are being the character, you won't be over-acting.)

- After diretion is given, continue to be confident. (CS-Several of you looked less confident, or deflated after you
wer given direction. You will ALWAYS be given direction.  You must get use to it and go with it!)

- Be sure to pull hair out of face for auditions and don't wear big earrings or accessories that would be distracting. (CS-You will see this "hair in the face" thing to be a continual complaint by several casting directors AND ME!)

- Don't forget headshot and resume for workshops or auditions. (CS-If you have one. If you don't, no worries.)

- Come into a scene with an objective.

- Make sure to listen to the other character - don't anticipate lines.

- Avoid playing a mood. (CS-Playing specific choices is much more interesting to watch.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

SHARON LIEBLEIN SEMINAR NOTES (HEAD OF CASTING AT NICKELODEON)
Notes Paraphrased by CS

- What can you do to make yourself stand out?

- You read it.  You read it again and then you read it again and after that you read it again to figure it out.

- Producers will give you direction - sometimes just to see if you are directable.

- Acting can be a hobby and it is a great hobby, but YOU are in charge of YOU!

- What I (Sharon) teach is audition technique.  I don't teach you what you need to know once you get on the set.

- Sharon likes monologues for character development work.

- Acting is reacting.

- Don't Say "I just got the sides." (CS-Joey Paul-Jensen hates this, too.  They know EVERYONE just got the sides!)

- "When are the callbacks?"

- Makeup is disgusting. (ANOTHER continual complaint I get from casting directors and agents!)

- We (NICK) want a real kid.

- No bangles or jingling change.

- No tight jeans with stuff sticking out because it is distracting.

- OUTFITS MATTER.  If it's a preppy role, wear a button down.  Average role?  Wear a T-shirt.  SELL IT THE BEST WAY YOU CAN.  (CS-When Cody booked "Hoot" he wore what the character wore in the book.  For Jake Ryan, he dressed like what Jake Ryan might wear.  Cheesy?  Maybe to some people, but it means "bookings" for many professionals, however.

- Pay attention to what you are selling.  What is your package?

- Do not wear form fitting anything - no hats.

- TABLE READ IS THE  MOST IMPORTANT TIME AND NETWORK IS WATCHING.  Kids are fired at the TABLE READ.

-  "Know your character and the lines will just come."

- Sharon hates "sitting" in the audition.  She prefers you always stand because there is more energy that way.

- They see 300 - 1000 kids for every role.  Only 30 are brought back.  You need to stand out and make it special, finding those places in the sides that make you laugh and do something different about it.

- Do not stop pacing / timing because you are trying to find your place.

- Don't change the words - it changes timing.

- Don't add words.

- Make sure the diction is clear; don't swallow the words.

- Be careful not to sway when doing a scene.

- It's comedy!  Your character walks a certain way and talks a certain way.  How does he stand, etc.? Sketch comedy needs to be bigger.  Make STRONG choices.

- When doing a scene, never turn to the side.

- Make sure to stay in character even during the reader's lines.

- When there are notes in the scene such as "bright side", this is your clue on how to play it.

- If you don't know how to pronounce a word, ask someone or look it up! (She even told one boy that this one of the reasons he didn't get called back for a project.)

- Do not kill your last line; final moment needs to be great!  End scene STRONG.

HEAD SHOT / RESUME NOTES:

- Never have a picture with braces.

- Sharon loves color pictures (hates blackand white.) (CS-BTW, black and white pictures have been "out" for years.)

- Wants pic to be straight on - no side looks.

- Need a crossover picture (for comedy or drama) or two different pictures.

- Resume needs to be simple, three columns.  List film credits first, then TV, etc.  Don't list commercials.  Write "conflicts available upon request."

- Do not put "extra" work on your resume.

- If you can't roller blade or play the clarient, do not put it on your resume!  Example - Boy who said he could roller blad was cast for a commercial where he had to roller blad; he broke his leg the first day. His agent was mad at the parents and kid and the casting director and producer wer mad at the agent.

- She doesn't care to read about awards that don't pertain to theatre.  Example - First thespian freshman inducted
in country is cool.

- When listing theatre on resume, Sharon wants to know if it's the lead or supporting and should say "theatre" and
not "state."

- DOB should always be on resume.  (CS-Many agents in the DALLAS market do NOT want the Date of Birth on the resume, so keep two different resume's: one for Dallas and one for L.A. people.)

- Make sure information on resume is accurate.  Example - Resume listed Cathryn Stroud as Nick Casting Director, when she is actually a Casting Director that casts for Disney.  Sharon is the head of casting at Nickelodeon, so this was not good.

- For casting director workshops, don't list each casting director. Simply put "various casting directors."

- On special skills, don't say things like "enjoys singing", but rather "sings (alto)." Be specific.  Instead of dance, list what kind of dance.  If listing things like a sport, put the number of years in parenthesis. Example - Tennis (3).

- She doesn't need to see on your resume if you are an honor student.

- If you are SAG Eligible, write that rather than "SAGE."

- On resume, agency should be listed on top and manager on bottom.

- Never put "screen test" on resume.

Sharon commented that while seeing all of the kids, she was thinking "WOW! Something is being done right here!  There are so many great kids.  For the next pilot I do, I'm COMING HERE, WOW!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

GENERAL COMMENTS for HOWARD MELTZER SEMINAR, CASTING DIRECTOR OF "I'M IN THE BAND"
AND "HANNAH MONTANA"
(Notes Paraphrased by CS)
